Taobao

Taobao.com is the most popular e-commerce platform for retail, currently close to 500 million registered users, 60 million daily visitors, over 800 million products on shelf concurrently and in average 48 thousand products checked-out every minute.

 

 

Taobao published half-yearly performance report ending 30th June in 20th August. The report showed, in the first half of 2009, Taobao achieved ¥80.9 billion value of transactions, close to the total sum of ¥99.96 billion value of the whole previous year.
Compared to statistics release by China National Statistics Bureau, the first half consumer transaction totaled at ¥5871 billion, Taobao captured 1.4%, a rise of 0.4% compared to last year. In light of Double Eleven (Singles’ day / 11 Nov) and Double Twelve ( 12 Dec), Taobao revenue will break record to ¥200 billion

 

 

Taobao has two features for sales, firstly each shop will have an online “Shop Waiter”to answer queries online, and secondly, alipay will be used as the payment method. Particularly, online customer service is unique among global e-commerce sites. Therefore, Taobao promises more consumer interactivity than the rest.

Tmall (Tmall International)

+Tmall and Taobao are e-commerce sites of Alibaba. Tmall established in 2012, distinguished by having brand owner shops only. In essence, their differences are similar to that of yahoo auction and yahoo shopping center in Taiwan. Tmall has greater appeal in product quality, all merchants and products undergo rigid verification, guaranteeing consumer of product quality.

 

 

Up till now, Tmall has over 400 million buyers, 50 thousands merchants, 70 thousands brands. Since 2013, Tmall has started inviting overseas merchants to join Tmall International, allowing international brands to enter China e-commerce market. Goods may be shipped via direct express, and payment settled by international Alipay with forex exchange ratio in US dollar, thus removing obstacles in the flow of money and goods. International brands such as UNIQLO, HP, SKII, DELL and NIKE have embraced TMALL as the primary channel to enter China Market. In respect to other original brands, Tmall are proving comparable good performance, and many OEM companies have also identified their brand positioning in Tmall.

 

 

In order to increase the quality of product purchased online, Alibaba has poured in significant resource to nurture merchants in Tmall. All promotion tools such as natural search, double eleven, double twelve etc, have been prioritized to Tmall merchants. In about 2 years of established, Tmall merchants has taken up 35% share of Taobao’s revenue. Almost across the product category, Tmall merchants top the list as sellers.
